Western Macedonia’s dynamic transition into a new era was marked by the highly successful event held on Thursday, September 24, in the Multipurpose Hall of the Syntagma Metro Station. The event, which brought together leading institutional representatives, was highlighted by the keynote presentation by the President of the D GROUP, Dr. Dimitris Derpanis, who announced the strategic plan for the “next chapter” of the Vasilitsa National Ski Center.

Joining Forces for “A Region in Transition”

The event highlighted a cohesive vision for the region. Opening remarks were delivered by the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, Mr. Nikos Papathanasis, and the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ms. Anna Karamanli, who emphasized the importance of tourism and economic revitalization. The Regional Governor of Western Macedonia, Mr. Georgios Amanatidis, outlined the vision for “a place that is changing,” while the Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism, Culture, and Environment, Dr. Polytimi Farmaki, highlighted the region’s authenticity as “a place you always return to.”

The Driving Force: The Vision of D GROUP and Dr. Derpanis

The highlight of the event, which transformed the Region’s vision into tangible reality, was the speech by Dr. Dimitris Derpanis. The President of D GROUP presented the plan for U Resort, a Group company that, through a 36-million-euro investment, will undertake the complete redevelopment, radical modernization, and operation of the Vasilitsa Ski Center for the next 40 years.

“Our plan involves a complete transformation that will benefit Western Macedonia, Epirus, and the entire country as a whole,” emphasized Dr. Derpanis, explaining how Vasilitsa is now being transformed into a year-round mountain destination that connects visitors with the natural beauty, traditions, and new culinary trends of the Pindus Mountains.

These ambitious projects, with reconstruction set to begin on April 1, 2027, include:

  • Exemplary Hospitality: The creation of a 4-star hotel, a state-of-the-art chalet, and a luxurious alpine village.
    Skiing Excellence & Recreation: Modernization of the ski lifts, starting immediately with the historic “Philippos” line, and the creation of an iconic umbrella bar at the highest point.
  • Accessibility for All: Redesign of a smart parking system with a strong emphasis on equal and unimpeded accessibility for people with disabilities across all facilities.
  • Investment in Elite Sports: Creation of a state-of-the-art, cutting-edge fitness center and an Olympic-sized indoor pool—facilities that will serve as an altitude training center for national teams and professional clubs.

  • Conference Tourism: Construction of an exhibition center and amphitheater to host high-profile events.

With this strategic investment, the D GROUP and U Resort are demonstrating their confidence in the potential of Western Macedonia by creating a destination of international renown.
